She gave him a plastic bag from the chemist and so, side by side they picked.

School faded from Fabian’s thoughts. The lady had more plastic bags in her pocket, this was the third they had filled with chestnuts.

“What do you want them for?” he asked.

“I’m going to open a shop.”

“Are you going to sell chestnuts? But you can’t eat this kind can you?

She peered at him through the enormous lenses, winked and said:

“The shop is just over there, you can always look in later?”

Fabian is a perfectly ordinary boy who is rather lonely. One day after school he meets a woman in the park. The Candy Witch is the name of the shop she is about to open.

Vicky is Fabian’s big sister. She demonstrates and holds meetings to obstruct the politician’s decision to chop down the old trees in Kings Park. Both Fabian and the “Candy Witch” help out.

Dad had left a note on the kitchen table before he went to work this morning. Fabian read it again: Don’t forget that we’re going to buy new skates today. Come down to my work no later than 5.30. PUCK!

Fabian loves his dad. When they’re together it’s nearly always at some kind of sport and most often ice hockey. He wouldn’t say it’s exactly boring to play hockey and Fabian isn’t the worst on the team, but in a way it’s really his dad’s thing. When Jonathon asks if Fabian wants to join the Chess Club it clashes with training. But what will his dad say if Fabian wants to quit playing?
